Heartland Housing Foundation
Heartland Housing Foundation (HHF) is a not-for-profit housing management body that provides affordable and near-market housing for over 900 residents of Strathcona County and Fort Saskatchewan. Heartland Housing Foundation currently operates 12 affordable and near-market housing sites, including 4 seniors lodges, 6 seniors-only apartment buildings, and 2 all-ages apartment buildings, with two upcoming developments of all-ages apartment buildings in both Strathcona County and Fort Saskatchewan.
Heartland Housing Foundation actively advocates for expanded access to affordable housing in the region, and is a member of several national, provincial, and regional affordable housing associations and working groups.

The Opportunity
The Heartland Housing Foundation (HHF) is seeking to add up to three (3) Committee Members to work in collaboration with the Board and the Chief Executive Officer to provide strong governance, strategic planning, and support the overall management and strategic direction of the organization. Committee Members are typically positioned to fill future board vacancies of which three (3) or more will be arising within the next one (1) to three (3) years.
The Board effectively manages its role in oversight and governance through the following three committees:
- Governance and Human Resource (GHR)
- Finance, Audit & Risk Management (FARM)
- Capital Planning (CP)
Committee Term
Committee members are not bound by term lengths. If a committee member becomes a member of the Board of Directors, they are then appointed for three (3) year terms for a maximum of two (2) terms (six years total).
Time Commitments
Board Committee Meetings: Meet four (4) times per year, for 1-2 hours.
- GHR – February, May, July/August, November.
- FARM – March, May, September, November.
- CP – currently scheduled bi-monthly to support capital development demands.
Once appointed to the Board, Committee Members can anticipate the Board Meetings to be scheduled four times per year (March, June, October and December).

Typically the meetings occur on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, from 9am-12pm.
Board & Committee Honoraria & Expenses: Board of Directors and Committee Members receive a meeting honoraria and are eligible for expense reimbursement for related conferences, workshops and meetings.
Board Member Requirements
Individuals interested in a Committee opportunity with the Heartland Housing Foundation should have a personal interest and align with the Noble Cause of contributing to attainable housing solutions in the communities we serve.

- Preference to individuals that reside, do business in, or possess personal connections within Strathcona County and/or the City of Fort Saskatchewan.
- Experience on a not-for-profit, public or private governance committee or board.
- Completion of a corporate or NFP board governance course or program (e.g. ICD.D).
- A leader with senior level management experience in a non-for-profit, private or public sector organization.
- Experienced in community engagement and developing strategic partnerships.
- Respectful, ethical, and demonstrates the highest level of personal and professional integrity.
- Confident public speaking skills and track record of building durable relationships.
- Collegial and a capacity to balance advocacy with inquiry.
- Strategic planning and risk management experience.
- Preferred areas of expertise (at a governance level) would include, but are not limited to, housing, real estate, property development, construction management, finance, senior’s care, and government relations.
