About the Organization     

Formed in 1963, Robin Hood Association (RHA) is a non-profit, registered, charitable organization with an elected volunteer Board of Directors, dedicated to providing high-quality and innovative services to children and adults with developmental disabilities.

RHA is the primary provider of services to children and adults with developmental disabilities in Sherwood Park, AB, Fort Saskatchewan, AB and the surrounding region. The organization serves approximately 350 adults and 414 children, their families, guardians or trustees.

RHA services are delivered by a committed team of over 740 full, part-time and relief staff. Their compassion, dedication, and genuine care for the people they support are the organization’s life force.

Volunteers also play a vital role in all aspects of the organization including the Board of Directors, and involvement in service delivery and engagement in fundraising initiatives and events. The RHA receives operational contract funding from the Government of Alberta, some grant funding, fees for specific services, and the generous support of individuals, businesses, and community groups.

Adult Services:

  • Day Services: Equipping individuals with skills, helping them secure employment opportunities, and fostering community involvement to promote independence and personal growth.
  • Shared Homes: Providing a variety of home options, from fully staffed homes to independent living, all focused on supporting individual needs and promoting independence.
  • Respite Services: Delivering both in-home and out-of-home respite care, offering personalized support to people living in their family homes while fostering community integration and meaningful activities.

Children & Youth Services:

  • Early Childhood Intervention Program: Supporting families concerned about their child’s development in multiple areas, or who have a diagnosis affecting their development.
  • Behavioral Development Support (BDS):FSCD-funded services supporting children through six-month contracts in Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, and Psychology.
  • Family Support: Supporting families who have children with special needs within Strathcona County and Fort Saskatchewan.
  • Family Behavioural Consultation Program: Providing behavioral and developmental resources to families with children who have disabilities, through FSCD for 3-6 months.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Service Officer, the Director of Adult Services will be a key member of the leadership team and is responsible for strategic leadership, oversight, and continuous improvement and development of adult services. This role will have oversight and is accountable for the effective delivery of high-quality, person-centered services that aligns with the mission, values, and service quality standards. The Director will lead a caseload management team in Sherwood Park & Fort Saskatchewan, manage program performance, and be a champion for the rights and inclusion of adults with developmental disabilities.

This position oversees a team of seven direct reports:

  • Supported Home Living
  • Assisted Living Program
  • Independent Living
  • Home and Supported Independent Living
  • Adult Services Fort Saskatchewan
  • Sherwood Park Day Services and Employment Services
  • Community Living

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will first and foremost need to understand and have experience in change management from the perspective of coming into an organization and leading a team of long tenured passionate personnel that will require time with a new leader. They will be a values-driven leader who brings a collaborative and strategic approach to overseeing and guiding the Adult Services Team. They are deeply committed to person-centered, community-inclusive practices and are skilled in managing diverse service portfolios including residential, day, employment, and community access programs. They will champion a culture of accountability, continuous improvement and the rights and inclusion of adults with developmental disabilities. They will not only be operationally capable but also  bring humility, empathy, and a strong alignment with the organization’s people-first, service-driven culture. They are adept at building strong relationships with staff, families, community partners, and funders, and ensuring that services are responsive, high-quality, and aligned with evolving needs. They will inspire their team and uphold excellence in every aspect of service delivery.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Organizational Alignment:

  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of Adult Service programs.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and organizational goals as a member of the senior management team.
  • Champion innovation and continuous improvement in service delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, accreditation standards, and contractual obligations.
  • Work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment as well as being able to work independently
  • Employees may be required to support other program areas during staffing shortages or emergencies to better support the needs of the individuals or programs.

Program Oversight and Quality Assurance:

  • Oversee a broad portfolio of adult services including residential, day, employment, and community inclusion programs.
  • Promote person-centered planning and self-determination for adults supported.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to support holistic service delivery.
  • Develop and manage program budgets in collaboration with the finance department.
  • Monitor resource allocation and ensure cost-effective service operations.
  • Ensure robust risk management and quality assurance systems are in place.

Team Leadership and Staff Development:

  • Lead, mentor, and support program managers, supervisors, and frontline staff.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and ongoing professional development.
  • Promote staff well-being and retention through inclusive and supportive practices.

Community Partnership Engagement and Advocacy:

  • Act as a liaison with families, guardians, community partners, and funding bodies.
  • Advocate on behalf of individuals supported and their families to ensure services meet evolving needs.

Organizational Standards, Ethics and Compliance:

  • Understand and practice all Robin Hood Association (RHA) Policies and Procedures, practices and operational protocols, including mission statements, ethical standards and guidelines, restrictive procedures, abuse and medical protocols, Alberta Accommodation Standards, Alberta Health Services standards, Municipal Fire Standards, Occupational Health & Safety standards, and Creating Excellence Together (CET) Standards and Accreditation.
  • Adherent to RHA Code of Ethics.
  • Professional conduct and appearance befitting a representative of RHA, which will include good performance related to personnel policies, such as attendance, punctuality and conflict resolution.
  • Due to the nature of work supporting individuals with developmental and physical disabilities, all employees of the Robin Hood Association are required to possess a minimal standard level of physical capability. The ability to meet these physical demands will ensure safety both for the employee and the individuals receiving service.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in Social Work, Disability Studies, Human Services, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive leadership experience, preferably in the not-for-profit social / community services sector, and preferably with disability services and expertise in adult programming.
  • Strong knowledge of provincial regulations, person-centered practices, and community-based service delivery models.
  • Demonstrated success in managing large teams at multi-sites within a community-based service organization.
  • Experience working in a non-profit or charitable organization with a governance board structure.
  • Proven track record of program development, strategic planning, and implementing service models that reflect current best practices in disability support.
  • An understanding of Alberta’s disability services landscape, including legislation, policy frameworks, and funding models (e.g., FSCD, PDD).
  • Experience working with people who have developmental disabilities.

  • Competent in managing budgets, interpreting financial reports, and ensuring responsible stewardship of organizational resources.
  • Commitment to Continuous Improvement – embraces data-informed decision-making, quality assurance practices, and innovation in service delivery.
  • Passionate about promoting the rights and dignity of adults with developmental disabilities; experience in policy advocacy or public awareness work is an asset.
  • Proficient with technology for program management, reporting, communication, and staff coordination (e.g., Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint).

Compliance

Final candidates will be required to complete a Police Information Check, Vulnerable Sector Check, Child Intervention Record Check, and submit a Driver’s Abstract.
